does Idol always ruin Motown?

I have a lousy Idol memory -- do they always suck at Motown? I like a lot of Motown and always initially think you can't screw it up too much, but other than Adam and Allison this whole night was either downright bad or boring as hell.

I'd send Blind Guy or Spazzy Tattoo Gal home first, but won't complain if Oil Rigger goes instead. It'd better not be Allison.

Why didn't anyone mention what an Elvis vibe Adam had going on?

  1. Yeah, I think Idol always ruins Motown. Check out the comments about Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch over at ew.com's Idolatry.

I'm with you on bottom three to go home; I'd be happy with any of those.

Re: Anime Elvis... I originally typed "Elvis" in my post, but changed it to "Chris Isaak" at the last minute. Great minds!

  2. Gregory, is there a term for when a singer crosses over the "break" from high to low in their voice? One of the things bugging the hell out of me about Megan is that whenever she crosses into her lower register she gets all bizarre -- she makes funny shapes with her mouth, changes the pronunciation of the words, etc. I'm not sure if she thinks her lower register is weak and is trying to cover it up, or if she thinks it's cute and is trying to call attention to it. But it drives me nuts. Her voice is interesting when she's singing "straight" in the higher register, and I like the kind of jazz/standards she would be a fit for, but I hate every performance.

  3. Believe it or not, it's called the break. It's not the same as going into falsetto; there's a point at which a singer needs to switch from full voice to head voice (the break) and then a higher point which requires the switch to falsetto.

I hadn't thought that through with Megan, but you're right. It's very odd and distracting. I keep thinking I like her voice and style, but then, no.
